The Best Acne Solutions: Treating Your Body Internally

Posted on the January 31st, 2010 under Acne Removal by

The best acne solutions aren’t in removal tools, creams, or even medications: these are only temporary quick fixes that will not work for the long-term.  The best acne solution is finding the root of the problem and addressing it.  Acne itself is usually a manifestation of something awry inside the body.  Two ways you can fix acne internally is by changing your diet and taking supplements for vitamins in which you are deficient.

Food as a natural acne solution

One of the many causes of acne is the toxic foods we consume each day.  If you are regularly eating refined sugars and fats, then you’re causing damage not only to your internal body, but also your skin.  Eliminate sugary foods and drinks, including sodas, fruit juices, candies and other treats.  Also beware of high fructose corn syrup.  When it comes to fats, cut out the “bad fats” also known as trans-fat and hydrogenated oils.  Instead, consume natural oils such as coconut, olive, flaxseed, and cod liver oil.  Nuts and seeds are also rich in good fats.

Other food substances you should avoid are synthetic excitoxin chemicals such as monosodium glutamate (MSG) and synthetic sweeteners (aspartame, sucralose, saccharine).  These are neurotoxins that are not only bad for your skin, but also damages the nervous system.

Here are more food tips that are natural solutions for acne:

  • Reduce or eliminate your intake of milk and dairy products. There are a number of hormones in cow’s milk which can be harmful to your skin. If you must drink milk, consume raw organic milk only.
  • Up your fish intake.  Fish is a rich source of  omega 3 oils that are excellent for the heart and wonderful for the natural health of the skin.
  • Eat fresh, raw whole foods.  The level of sebum in and on the skin is directly related to the presence of acne. Adopting a plant-based, raw, low fat food diet may help to reduce the levels of sebum in and on your skin, thereby improving your acne. So increase your intake of fresh locally grown fruit and vegetables in your diet, which contains high levels of acne-fighting antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

Using vitamins as an acne solution

Like every other part of the body, the skin needs certain types of vitamins for optimal health. The skin defends the body against external harmful agents as well as excreting toxic compounds through glands and pores.  Listed below are some of the essential vitamins and minerals that you should add to your acne-fighting regimen.

Vitamin A

Studies have revealed that a vitamin A deficiency may cause or aggravate acne.   Vitamin A is an important antioxidant that assists the body with toxic free radical elimination.  Vitamin A also helps to prevent or reduce acne by reducing sebum production.  You can easily find vitamin supplements, but green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits and carrots are the best natural sources for vitamin A.

Vitamin B

Vitamin B is a group of vitamins known as a “complex” containing Thiamine (vitamin B1), Riboflavin (vitamin B2), Niacin (also called Nicotinic Acid/Niacinamide, vitaminB3), Pantothenic Acid, Pyridoxine (vitamin B6), and Cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12).  A deficiency in vitamin B complex may precipitate acne, since this vitamin helps to keep the skin cells healthy.  Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) is notably important since it is a natural antioxidant .  Avocados, bananas, yams, green pepper, chickpeas and watermelons are all excellent sources of natural vitamin B complex.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C aids in collagen production, which is tensile connective tissue found in skin and bones. Vitamin C is also an immune-boosting vitamin that helps the body fight off infection.  This is especially important for those with acne since it is a skin infection.   Substances such as tobacco smoke, antibiotics and oral contraceptives are known to deplete the body’s vitamin C levels. If regularly take any of these substances, you will need to create a balance by increasing your vitamin C intake. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and broccoli are all natural sources of vitamin C.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is another vitamin that has antioxidant properties that heal and repair the skin. Vitamin E protects against cellular damage by checking the oxidation of fats and also by inhibiting the development of free radicals. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for vitamin E is 15 mg a day for adults.   Sunflower seeds, nuts, safflower oil, turnip greens and tomatoes are all good sources of natural vitamin E.

Honorable mentions include the minerals chromium and zinc which are also commonly deficient in acne sufferers.

As you can see, the best acne solutions aren’t found in miracle creams or pills; they are actually find in fresh whole foods.
